Parent’s Rights Bill Controversy Continues
A bill sponsored by a Republican Ohio Representative proposes strengthening the rights of a parent with transgender children.
(Ohio) – Last week House Bill 658 was proposed by Republicans Ron Brinkman and Paul Zeltwanger and according to the current version, would allow parents to deny transgender children the right to transition.
The debate also focuses on a piece of the legislation that would require teachers to notify parents or guardians of suspected transgender students. Teachers would be asked to report the child’s apparent desire to be treated opposite of their biological sex.
Supporters of the bill argue it makes sense considering children under 18 already require parental consent to begin hormone treatment.
It is to early to gauge overall support in the general assembly.
