(New Philadelphia, Ohio) – Big Brothers Big Sisters of East Central Ohio isn’t waiting for December to celebrate Christmas and the joy of giving.
This month the BBBS team has been pursuing Christmas in July as a special campaign designed to allow the public to invest in the organization’s mission. Olivia Scally, Director of Development and Marketing with BBBS ECO explained that while the organization hosts several larger fundraisers throughout the year, they wanted to do something fun that would be more accessible for a wider audience. “We wanted to offer small ways that people could support our mission, while also engaging with the community partners that support us throughout the year,” she said.
BBBS is continuing to partner with local organizations and companies to host a variety of opportunities for the community to give back. These opportunities include a percentage of sales being donated to BBBS, free classes offered at local attractions/facilities with donations accepted, cookie decorating, special movie showings and more. Coming up on Monday, July 23rd, they will be at the Quaker Cinema in New Philadelphia for a special showing of the movie, ‘The Star.’ “There is no charge to attend, however, we will be there with open donations that will all benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters,” said Scally. “We will be set up there with a table with some giveaways as well!”
Also coming up on Monday, BBBS plans to launch a Facebook fundraiser. “We have a very supportive and active community on Facebook and we would like to ask for their help to support our matches,” she added. “If every one of our followers donates just $2, we will exceed our goal for the campaign! If someone can’t contribute at this time, we would love to ask them to advocate for us and share the fundraiser with their friends.”
Next week, there will be information shared with the public about the BBBS mission, interviews with male matches, Waiting Little videos, special giveaways and more to let supporters behind the scenes of the organization.
This year, BBBS is also participating in New Towne Mall’s Holly Jolly Back to School Party on Wednesday, July 25th. “New Towne Mall has been a huge supporter of our organization, and it’s a great location to bring the community together,” said Scally. She explained that they will welcome a special guest at their event as he makes his way back from “vacation.”
The Back to School event has been a New Towne Mall tradition for the past 20 + years. “I chose to go with the Christmas theme [this year] because the back to school event was mandated in July corporate-wide,” explained Ailishia Maple with New Towne Mall. “I try to create new events throughout the year for local families to enjoy. BBBS reached out to me about doing something to support their Christmas in July [campaign] and we decided they could come during our event and set up a table.” She added that there will be a number of participants at the event all with different games, activities, and surprises. The main sponsors of the event include New Towne Mall, Dover Chemical, and QDA.
Also, Maple explained that another theme element for this year’s back to school party is Candy Land. “The entire mall, with the help of local organizations and 28 retailers located at the mall, is coming together to transform the mall into a Giant Candy Land theme starting at the C Entrance.” The event will include food, giveaways, and games. At 7:00 p.m. there will also be a fashion show in the B Court to wrap everything up.
The Holly Jolly Back to School Party will be held on Wednesday, July 25th from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Scally added that this is just another opportunity for BBBS to get involved with the community and share information about their mission. “Our agency works hard to serve the children in our community. We believe in one-to-one mentoring and feel that it’s such a simple, yet powerful way to make a difference,” she noted. “All these children have a tremendous amount of potential and we strive to match these children with adults in our community that will believe in them and defend that potential. These kids are our future, so advocating and empowering them is the best investment in our communities as they grow into future leaders.”
BBBS will provide a campaign update on July 31st.
