JFS announces government shutdown’s impact on food benefits

(New Philadelphia, Ohio) – The Federal Shutdown is impacting the issuance of SNAP (food benefits) for clients of Job and Family Services.

As a result of the existing shutdown, February benefits will be issued early to any Ohio resident that receives SNAP assistance. For those already receiving benefits, they will be issued for February sometime between January 18-30, according to Tuscarawas County JFS officials.

Clients are advised to plan accordingly in order to budget these benefits throughout the next month. Any new applications or renewal applications that are approved on or before January 20 will be issued. Those approved between January 20 and January 30 will most likely be distributed now, but there are no guarantees.

There is currently no funding for SNAP benefits past February. Agency clients with pending applications are encouraged to provide needed verifications immediately. Despite timelines in existing law to provide these, the sooner the agency receives needed information, the sooner it can approve applications.

Please note, regardless of the reopening of the government, February benefits will still be issued early. Also, the agency will continue to accept and process applications during the shutdown. The agency cannot guarantee when these benefits will be paid, however. Clients with questions
