Dover Public Library Seeks Volunteers for Outreach Department

(Dover, Ohio) – The Dover Public Library is now accepting applications for committed volunteers to help deliver books and other materials to patrons who are unable to visit the library themselves.

Volunteer applications are available online at http://www.doverlibrary.org/about-2/support-the-library/ or at the Library. Interested patrons can also call the Library at 330-343-6123 for more information.

The Library is looking for at least two volunteers to help deliver books to local care facilities and homebound patrons. The ideal volunteer will be a passionate reader, a people person, and able to commit to a set volunteering schedule. This volunteer position also requires some heavy lifting. Help is needed on Wednesday and Tuesday afternoons from about 1:30 to 4:00 PM. Volunteers who can only come every other week are welcome.

The Outreach Department at the Dover Public Library delivers books, movies, and more to Dover care facility residents as well as homebound patrons. Outreach Librarian Linda Toohey, Library Assistant Erica Mears, and a team of volunteers make over 175 deliveries a month. In addition, the Outreach Department offers programs at all Dover care facilities as well as the Senior Center.

“Our programs have really taken off in the last year,” says Toohey, known as “Library Linda” to her patrons. “We’ll sometimes have four programs in one week!”

This year, Library Linda is offering a series of programs based on countries of the world. Each month, she will present on a different country. Participants in the series will receive their own passport-themed cards and stickers for each event they attend. This program is sponsored in part by New Dawn Retirement Home and is just one of the ways Library Linda has continued to develop the Outreach Department at the Dover Public Library.

“The growth in programming for Outreach patrons is fabulous,” adds Teen/Outreach Services Manager Liz Strauss. “To continue to grow and offer programs at this rate, we are going to need some help from the community. If you’d like to give back and help support a wonderful service, please consider volunteering with us. Without volunteers, the Outreach Department just wouldn’t be the same.”
