DeWine signs ‘heartbeat’ bill

(Ohio) – Governor Mike DeWine signs one of the nation’s toughest restrictions on abortion into law.

The Republican governor signed the bill following passage in the state legislature on Wednesday.

DeWine’s predecessor, John Kasich, vetoed the bill twice while in office. He argues the law would lead to an expensive court battle with a likely conclusion that it is unconstitutional.

Prior to DeWine putting pen to paper, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) said they would file a constitutional challenge on behalf of Pre-Term Cleveland and three other Ohio abortion clinics.

The federal court record for similar bans in court stand at 0-4. The ACLU tweeted, “We’ll see you in court.”

The bill makes no exceptions for rape or incest and makes abortions illegal after 6 weeks, when a fetal heartbeat is detected.
