(Dennison, Ohio) – A special day to promote and remind families of the importance of family fitness and health.
Family Health & Fitness Day is celebrated by the National Recreation and Parks Administration the second Saturday in June each year. The day is designed to promote the importance of parks and recreation in keeping communities healthy. It also invites families to get active at their local park or recreation center, or by hosting an event, such as a health fair or family fun run.
1.) Make Time to Play!
Set aside 30 minutes three times a week to do a fun exercise with your kids. You can make this a part of your after-school or after-dinner routine. Young kids may enjoy hopscotch or hide-and-seek. Kick a soccer ball around or shoot hoops with your older kids! Or, in honor of Family Health and Fitness Day, take everyone to your local park for dinner!
2.) Walk or Bicycle Everywhere you Can!
Ohio weather is finally allowing for more outdoor activities. Gather the family on a Saturday and bike over to your local library. Or, go for a 30-minute family walk after dinner instead of heading right for the television.
3.) Plan Active Family Gatherings!
The summer months are full of back yard cookouts, festivals, and other outdoor activities. Consider serving up family fitness along with the hot dogs on the grill this 4th of July holiday! Plan active games such as tag or relay races. Older kids might enjoy a dance party!
4.) Make Household Chores Active and Fun!
Set aside time for household chores and do them together as a family. Play music as you clean, and take turns choosing favorite songs. Have your younger kiddos pick up toys or sweep the floors while dancing with the broom. Older kids can show off their moves while dusting, vacuuming and making the beds! Not only will the housework get done, but you’ll get some exercise in and make great memories!
5.) Keep the Momentum with Outdoor Choors!
Tis’ the season for yard work! Get your kids involved and have them help you plant and tend to the garden, and water the flowers!
