As the new year kicks off, we usually commit to a slew of resolutions…lose weight, quit smoking, volunteer more…but I’d like to challenge you to a  different resolution, one that will have tremendous benefits for a lifetime.

I’d like to challenge you to commit to simply appreciating the moment. I’m not talking about just the good moments, or celebratory moments, or “special moments”. I’m talking about EVERY moment!

See, life is about moments, not material things or the size of your waist. It’s about really noticing the sounds, colors, and feelings that show up each day because there is an opportunity in each.

Sometimes we can get so caught up in worrying about the future or analyzing the past that we lose out on the wonderful things that happen each day. So this year, challenge yourself to be more mindful of what is going on in the present. That is where we hold our greatest power…because the future hasn’t happened yet and the past is gone.

During the moments of your day, just notice what is going on around you and within you. Connect with the sensations and feelings that arise in your body. Connect with people surrounding you or allow your mind to rest in moments of solitude.

At first, this will be challenging because, as moms, we tend to be multi-taskers, always planning the next step or evaluating decisions from the past and that’s okay, SOMETIMES…But too much of this type of thinking leads to distressing feelings like worry, self-doubt, judgment, and disappointment. Then we miss out on the wonderful experiences of day-to-day life.

So, this year, commit to living-in-the-moment and give yourself the gift of joy, peace, and contentment.
