Why are people wearing pearls on Inauguration Day?

(U.S.) – Have you been wondering what the mission is behind #chucksandpearls?

The movement that’s been taking the social media world and behind by storm today is a vow to show support for Vice President Kamala Harris. Harris is often seen sporting Chuck Taylors and so the ‘chucks’ portion of the trending hashtag makes sense.

But, why the pearls?

Well, once again the reason is pretty direct. Vice President Harris is often seen sporting a strand. And there’s a lot of supporters visibly honoring Harris as she made history today:

* The first woman, the first woman of color, and the first woman of South Asian descent to hold the office of Vice President.

* She is also the first graduate of a Historically Black College (HBCU) to run on a major party’s political ticket.

And the latter further explains the pearls, which are a direct connection to her sorority. The pearl marks a symbol of unity and sisterhood for Alpha Kappa Alpha. Each new member is reportedly given a special badge decorated with 20 pearls upon initiation.
