(North Canton, Ohio) – Plans have been outlined for the city to break ground in the Spring on a new inclusive playground.
Part of a $1.75 million remodeling project, the playground for Dogwood Park will be designed to accommodate those of all ages, developmental stages, and skill levels, including those with disabilities. The project was born after officials indicated numerous calls from parents requesting a park experience that offered more inclusive enjoyment.
The project included a collaboration with the city, parks and recreation officials, and experts with North Canton City Schools and Akron Children’s Hospital. The plans for the new park include turf that is compliment with the Americans with Disabilities Act to ensure it accommodates wheelchairs. Playground equipment will be designed so those with disabilities and those without can play together. There will be swings, for example, that can also accommodate wheelchairs.
A portion of the playground will be designed to serve toddlers and smaller children, while other areas will be specifically for older children featuring things such as ziplines. The park will also be fully fenced with a single main entry point to help keep children safe. The project is expected to break ground in March with a tentative completion around October.
