Plan Your On-the-Go Health Snacks!

COVID-19 has forced many families to pump the brakes and slow down, but as summer looms and vaccines ease restrictions, it’s time to stock up on easy-to-grab snacks!

This is Public Health is brought to you in partnership with the Tuscarawas County Health Department.

It’s easy to grab fruit snacks or a bag of chips on your way out the door, but with a little planning and some research you can flip your family’s snack diet upside down.

Fruits and veggies are always a good choice for a family on the go! Keep a fruit bowl stocked with apples, bananas, and small mandarins. Wash and pack blueberries, raspberries, and strawberries in small plastic bags or containers for a quick grab-and-go snack.

Carrot sticks, celery, bell pepper slices, and sugar snap peas all make excellent snacks. In moderation, a cheese stick, rice cake, or piece of wheat toast with almond butter make a yummy quick bite, too.

Granola bars and protein bars can be a good snack, but keep an eye on the amount of sugar in your family’s snacks!

If you’re already late to soccer practice or running behind for ballet class, you can still make healthy decisions! Stock your pantry with baked or freeze-dried fruit. Try something a little different like seasoned chickpeas. Make a bag of lightly salted (and no butter!) popcorn. You can also encourage your family to snack on nuts, edamame, and sweet potato chips.

You don’t have to strain your brain or break the bank to snack healthy! Just pay attention to sugar, keep fresh produce on hand, and make snack prep a priority. 3. When it comes to on-the-go type snacks, fruits and veggies are probably the best options. You can store them for freshness and they pack enough nutrients to keep the body going strong throughout the day.
