(Dover, Ohio) – On Tuesday, March 2 at 6:30 PM, Sheriff Orvis Campbell will give a presentation on Zoom in partnership with the Dover Public Library.
The presentation will be entitled “Be on the Lookout for Scams and Frauds!” He will talk about the different scams and frauds that are seen locally and how they are perpetrated. He will discuss unemployment fraud which is happening frequently now.
Perpetrators of scams and fraudulent behavior may contact a potential victim in person, via social media or by telephone. They are experts at disguising themselves and their websites and can be very convincing. They most likely ask for personal information that they will then use in fraudulent ways. They may offer free prizes or money or make promises that seem “too good to be true.”
According to Consumer Fraud Reporting.org, the top ten scams of 2021 are debt collection, identity theft, phone scams, loan scams, internet merchandise scams, lottery scams, automobile-related complaints, credit scams and phishing emails. People of all ages can fall victim to these scams.
Orvis Campbell, a lifelong resident of Tuscarawas County, began his service here in 1990 when he was a probation officer. Over the years, he has served as Deputy Sheriff and detective until he was elected sheriff in 2016. Campbell is also an instructor for the Ohio Peace Officers Training Academy and a member of the International Homicide Investigators Association. He graduated from the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia. As an active member of the community, Campbell is a member of the Tuscarawas County Anti-Drug Coalition and a board member for the United Way of Tuscarawas County and for Noah’s Hope Child Advocacy Center. He has served on the boards of Harbor House, the domestic violence shelter, the substance abuse halfway house for women, Personal and Family Counseling Services as well as the ADAMHS Board of Tuscarawas and Carroll Counties. He was voted Ohio’s Outstanding Law Enforcement Officer for 2018 by the Ohio Prosecuting Attorney’s Association.
