Collin Fawcett is looking for an opportunity to serve the community as a member of the Claymont City School Board for the first time.

Fawcett is from the Claymont area and explained to Newsymom.com he’s lived there basically his entire life.

He left to attend college where he obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in both Economics and Business Administration, before returning to the Uhrichsville, Dennison area. “I’m very invested in the community.”

Fawcett has served on several boards including as a chairperson of the Claymont Foundation, Muskingum Lake Chapter of the American Red Cross and other organizations, but noted this is his first time running for an elected position.

He explained he’s always wanted to serve on the school board, but a previous employer would not permit it.

“Growing up in the Claymont district I’ve always had a passion for Claymont. I have two students in the district as well as a number of nieces and nephews and great friends, so I want what’s best for those kids,” said Fawcett.

Having served in a subcommittee to renovate the stadium Fawcett explained he has experience working closely with the community to gather ideas to make improvements. He added, however; making decisions that offer the best to students is most important.

“The kids deserve the best education they can get so I believe that being fiscally responsible is a must.”

An area he explained is top of mind is the financial wellbeing of the district. He cited a recent board meeting he attended in which he learned how much the district loses to students open enrolling into other area districts.

“I would like to find out why their open enrolling in other districts and see if there’s anything we can do to keep those kids in Claymont or bring them back to Claymont. It amounted to over $1 million. That’s a tremendous amount of money to a small district like Claymont.”

He noted his experience as a successful business owner for 16 years as potentially representing the missing puzzle piece to the board.

Another area of concern for Fawcett is the district’s current curriculum.

“I’m not, at all an educator, but I know that my kids are struggling with reading, so I’d like to know more about it and learn about why we’re using the curriculum we’re using.”

And lastly, he explained the communication between the community and the district is another area that could see an improvement.

“I think there are a lot of things that are done that aren’t communicated and I think that communication is the most important fact that you can have in building trust with the public,” said Fawcett. “There’s a lot of people that don’t trust the board and I’d like to build that trust back up.”
