Keeping an Eye on Your Vision & Eye Health

May is Healthy Vision Month and, if you’ve been putting off your dilated eye exam, it’s time to schedule it!

This is Public Health is brought to you in partnership with the Tuscarawas County Health Department.

Like a routine doctor or dentist appointment, seeing your eye doctor regularly is important. Your eyesight and undiagnosed conditions are assessed and treated during these visits. Eye exams are essential for all ages, from preschool to geriatric age. Catching damaging conditions such as cataracts or glaucoma can help counteract eventual blindness.

How Can I Protect My Vision?

Scheduling routine appointments for your dilated eye exam is a great start! You can also:

  • Eat dark, leafy greens and fish high in omega-3 acids
  • Know your family’s vision history
  • Maintain a healthy weight and do not smoke
  • Wear proper eye safety gear when working or playing sports
  • Wear sunglasses

You should make an appointment with your eye care professional for any eye-related issues. Don’t ignore symptoms such as eye pain or decreased vision, double vision, floaters, or dryness/red eyes, or moments that you see flashes of light.
