Student Found with Stolen Handgun at School

(Canton, Ohio) – The investigation continues into a 15-year-old student bringing a stolen handgun to McKinley High School last week.

The student was arrested on Wednesday, September 12th, according to reports from the Canton Police Department. He reportedly had the loaded .380-caliber Ruger LCP handgun at the school just before 8:00 a.m. that morning. He was booked into the Multi-County Juvenile Attention Center on charges of having a weapon on school property, carrying a concealed weapon and receiving stolen property.

District Superintendent, Adrian Allison released the following statement:

“On Wednesday morning, the Canton Police Department received a tip that one of our students might have a weapon at school. They alerted our School Resource Officers who immediately detained the student and found a small handgun in his book bag. The student was taken into custody. The district’s School Resource Officers, Safety and Security team and administration handled the situation swiftly with a priority of removing the potential danger without incident and without causing any disruption among the students. While I am disappointed that this incident occurred, know that the district’s safety and security protocols, as well as communication between the police department and the school, effectively resolved this matter without incident.  The Canton City School District will continue to have a zero tolerance for weapons. Please continue to encourage your student that if they see something, say something. It’s important and it works.”
