Want to hear something scary? Halloween is only TEN days away! That may be downright terrifying if your family still doesn’t have their costumes picked out!
This informational campaign comes to you in partnership with the Stark County Community Action Agency.
Halloween is the perfect time to get creative with your family, but it doesn’t have to be stressful or expensive. If you’re looking for some easy and fun costume ideas that will make your family the stars of the neighborhood look no further!
1. The Superhero Squad
You don’t need to be a comic book expert to pull off an awesome superhero group costume. Whether you love Marvel, DC, or want to create your own unique characters, dressing up as a superhero family is always a hit. You can easily customize each costume based on what you already have at home!
What You’ll Need:
- DIY Capes: Buy inexpensive fabric (or use old t-shirts) to create simple capes for each family member. You can cut them into a rectangle shape and tie them around the neck, or even use a fabric adhesive to attach a logo or emblem on the back.
- T-shirts and Masks: Use solid-color t-shirts for the base of each costume and draw or print out superhero logos (think Batman, Wonder Woman, Spider-Man, etc.) and glue or tape them onto the shirts. For the masks, use black fabric or cardstock to create eye masks, or even just face paint.
- Superhero Accessories: Get creative with items like foam swords, shields, or old tights for legs (a perfect stand-in for tights like Spider-Man!). It’s easy, and the result is a fun, coordinated look.
2. The Classic Monsters
You just can’t beat the classics. Dress up as iconic spooky creatures from folklore. It’s a great way to bring some old-school Halloween vibes to your celebration! These costumes can be put together with just a few basic items.
How to do it:
- Frankenstein’s Monster: A green shirt or jacket and black pants form the base of this look. Add some stitched details with fabric paint or a marker, and use makeup or face paint for a ghoulish green complexion. Top it off with messy hair, and don’t forget the bolts on the sides of the neck.
- Vampire: Black clothing and a red accent (like a scarf or sash) are the perfect foundation. Use makeup to create a pale, undead look, and add fangs (which you can find at most dollar stores).
- Mummy: Wrap a white shirt or tunic in strips of fabric (you can tear old sheets or use gauze). Mess up your hair for a disheveled look, and apply some gray or brown face makeup to give it a weathered effect.
- Werewolf: Use a brown shirt and pants, then add faux fur from a craft store to the sleeves and legs. Face makeup can easily transform you into a wild, furry creature of the night.
The best thing about these classic monsters is that they can be as simple or detailed as you want! They’re guaranteed to be a Halloween hit!
3. The Breakfast Club
For something quirky and fun, consider dressing up as breakfast items! From pancakes and bacon to eggs and cereal, this costume idea will make your family’s Halloween morning even more special. It’s a lighthearted and creative option that doesn’t require much time.
How to do it:
- Pancake and Syrup: For the pancake, use a large round piece of cardboard or foam and paint it a golden-brown color. Add syrup by attaching a strip of brown fabric or painted foam on top. For the syrup bottle, you can create a simple cone shape for the cap and a label that says “Syrup.”
- Bacon: Dress in a red and white striped shirt (or use fabric to make strips). You can even add some texture by cutting out jagged edges to mimic the crispy, wavy edges of bacon.
- Egg: A large white circle or an egg-shaped cutout on a white shirt can represent the egg. Use a bright yellow circle to represent the yolk. Alternatively, you can make the yolk by creating a circular cushion and attaching it to your child’s shirt.
- Cereal Box: Use a large box, cut out armholes, and decorate it to look like a box of cereal. You can create a “custom cereal” by designing a fun label and adding colorful “cereal” shapes made of foam or fabric.
No matter your budget or how much time you have to prep, these family Halloween costume ideas are sure to bring joy to your Halloween celebrations. The key is to enjoy the process of creating something together. Halloween is about having fun and making memories, so why not make this year’s costumes as easy and fun as possible?
Happy Halloween! 🎃👻
