It’s a month all about love & Cupid, but it’s also American Heart Month. Are you at risk for heart disease?

This is Public Health is brought to you in partnership with the Tuscarawas County Health Department.

The old adage says it’s a man’s world, but we all know that’s not true. And just as many women suffer from heart disease as men! According to CDC, “heart disease” is categorized as several different heart conditions, including heart attacks and coronary heart disease.

One in every five female deaths is related to heart disease. It is the top killer of women, especially among black and white women. Knowing the symptoms, as well as what may put you at risk, might just save your life.

Symptoms of Heart Disease

  • Pain in jaw, throat, or neck
  • Angina (chest pain, including achy, heavy, or sharp pains)
  • Pain in the back or upper abdomen
  • Vomiting
  • Nausea
  • Fatigue

Keep in mind, symptoms are sometimes silent. A heart attack or heart failure may happen seemingly out of nowhere.

Am I at Risk for Heart Disease?

The following increase your risk for heart disease:

  • Being overweight or obese
  • Unhealthy food choices
  • Diabetes
  • Consuming too much alcohol
  • Being physically inactive

Ways to reduce your risk for heart disease include not smoking, limiting alcohol, and managing stress. Keeping an eye on your blood pressure, your cholesterol, and the food choices you make will also lower your risk. Talk with your doctor if you have concerns.
