If it feels like you’ve been hearing more about Hand, Foot, & Mouth Disease (HFMD) lately, you’re right — cases have been on the rise across Ohio. The good news? HFMD is usually mild and clears up on its own, but it’s also highly contagious, which means a little prevention can go a long way in keeping your household healthy.
This information about Hand, Foot, & Mouth Disease is brought to you in partnership with the Tuscarawas County Health Department.
What Is Hand, Foot, & Mouth Disease?
HFMD is a common illness caused by a virus, often seen in young children, but adults can get it too. It usually starts with a fever, sore throat, or feeling tired, and then small red spots or blisters may appear on the hands, feet, or in the mouth. While the rash might look alarming, most people recover fully in about 7–10 days without medical treatment.
How It Spreads
HFMD spreads easily through droplets in the air from sneezing, coughing or talking. The virus can also spread through contact with objects that have particles on them like doorknobs and tables — which is why regular handwashing is one of the best defenses.
How to Protect Your Family
Here are a few simple ways to help stop the spread:
- Wash hands often
-
Disinfect frequently touched surfaces like counter tops, light switches, and toys.
-
Avoid sharing cups, utensils, or food.
-
Keep kids home from daycare or school until they’re fever-free and feeling better.
HFMD might be common, but a few small steps can help protect your loved ones — and everyone around you. Stay healthy this season by washing hands regularly, keeping things clean, and giving extra care to little ones if they come down with symptoms.
