Five Conversation Goals when it comes to Talking to Kids about Alcohol and Other Drugs all Moms Need to Know!
An important factor to raising your child with strong open relationship with a parent. It is important to start talking to your children about alcohol and drugs before they are exposed.
Five Conversation Goals:
1. Show your disapproval of underage drinking and other drug usage.
2. Show you care about your child’s health, wellness, and success.
3. Show you’re a good source of information about alcohol and other drugs.
4. Show you’re paying attention and you’ll discourage risky behaviors.
5. Build your child’s skills and strategies for avoiding drinking and drug use.
Remember that 80% of young people ages 10 to 18 say their parents are the leading influence on their decision whether or not to drink. A clear message from you about drinking is necessary for them to be lead in the right direction when it comes to drinking. They are more likely to not drink if they know your on their side.
The goal in parenting is for your child to make informed decisions in their lives not only about alcohol and drugs but other major topics in life. The last thing you want is your child to learn about things from unreliable sources. If your child knows you are paying attention to what they are doing they are less likely to try things that are not in their best interest. Always remember that your child is less likely to try drinking or drugs if they know you will notice. Your child doesn’t want to try drugs or alcohol but we have to remember the Peer Pressure is real and is a very powerful thing.
Having plans and open conversation is key in raising your child to be strong and open with you and other adults. Remember to keep this low-key. Don’t think you have to get it all done in one talk. You can plan different short talks.
If you talk they will hear you, it’s important for your child to develop into the remarkable child you want them to be and make the informed right decisions as they develop.
