From Drop-Off to Crosswalk: Back-to-School Safety for Parents and Kids

Back-to-school season is here, and with it comes the morning rush of backpacks, drop-offs, and after-school pick-ups. As parents, we juggle a lot during these busy weeks—but keeping safety top of mind is one of the best ways we can protect not only our own kids, but every child heading to and from school.

If You’re Driving Your Kids:
School zones and drop-off lines can feel hectic. Here are a few reminders that help keep everyone safe:

  • Slow down and stay alert. When you’re near a school, playground or residential area it is especially important to watch your surroundings. Children can be unpredictable, especially around buses and crosswalks.
  • Follow school bus rules. Never pass a bus when its stop sign is out or lights are flashing—it means kids are crossing.
  • Minimize distractions. A quick glance at your phone can mean missing a child stepping into the road.
  • Keep crosswalks clear. Cross walks are a designated space for pedestrians. Blocking the cross walk may force students to walk around your car- potentially putting them in the path of moving traffic.
  • Keep your eye out for bikers. Some bikers, especially children may forget to signal. Keep an eye out for bikers turning and give them the right of way whenever necessary.

If you have a driver:

Take the time to sit them down and have a chat about simple safety rules. Whether its their first year driving to school or they’re a senior and a little more seasoned- it never hurts to give them a gentle reminder to keep themselves and other students safe.

If Your Kids Ride the Bus:

Give your children the knowledge they need to stay safe getting on, riding and getting off of the bus. Teach them to play it SAFE

  • Stay at least ten feet — five giant steps — away from the curb.
  • Always wait until the bus comes to a complete stop and the bus driver signals for you to board.
  • Face forward after finding a seat on the bus.
  • Exit the bus after it stops and look left-right-left for cars before crossing a street.

If Your Kids Walk or Bike to School:

Helping your child build safe habits is key:

  • Practice walking the route with them so they know where crosswalks and sidewalks are.
  • Remind them to look both ways, make eye contact with drivers, and avoid running into the street.
  • If they bike, make sure they wear a helmet and bright clothing so drivers can easily spot them.

Why It Matters:

We all want our kids to arrive at school ready to learn—not shaken by a close call on the road. When parents model patience, attentiveness, and safety, kids notice and follow suit. Together, we can make school mornings less stressful and much safer.
