As National Emergency Preparedness Month comes to a close, it’s the perfect reminder to make sure your family is ready for whatever might come your way. One of the simplest—and most important—steps you can take is to put together (or update) your household’s emergency supply kit.
These tips for ensuring your family is prepared for unexpected emergencies are brought to you in partnership with The Tuscarawas County Health Department.
What to Include in Your Kit
Start with the basics: food, water, and other essential supplies to last at least several days. These items are the foundation of your kit and can make a huge difference if you’re without power or access to stores. Make sure your kit is stocked with essentials from this list as well:
- Prescription medications
- Food, water and any other supplies your pets may need
- Important family documents such as copies of insurance policies and identification in a waterproof container.
- Cash and change
- Emergency reference information such as a first aid book so you know what to do if minor medical attention is required.
- Matches or lighters in a waterproof container.
- Feminine hygiene products.

Think About Your Family’s Unique Needs
Every household is different, so once you’ve covered the basics, take a moment to think about your family’s specific situation. Do you have pets that need food or medications? Infants who need formula or diapers? Toddlers that will need to be occupied? Seniors who may require special medical supplies? Adding these personalized touches ensures your kit truly works for your whole family.
Why It Matters
Emergencies often come without warning, and being prepared means peace of mind. Having your own food, water, and other supplies ready to go gives you one less thing to worry about in a stressful situation—and helps you focus on keeping your family safe.
