From Power Outages to Flooding: How to Prepare Your Family This September

Life can be unpredictable. Flooding, storms, or extended power outages can happen when we least expect them—and when they do, being prepared makes all the difference. That’s why every September, we recognize National Preparedness Month: a reminder to take small but important steps to keep ourselves, our families, and our communities safe.

These tips for being prepared for emergencies is brought to you in partnership with The Tuscarawas County Health Department.

Why Preparedness Matters

Emergencies can force families to evacuate their homes or live without power for days. Having a plan in place ensures that when the unexpected happens, you’ll know exactly what to do—and your family will feel more confident and secure.

Simple Steps to Get Started

Not sure where to begin? Here are a few practical tips:

  • Make a family plan. Talk with your household about what to do in different emergencies, where to meet if separated, and how to stay in touch.

  • Build an emergency kit. It’s always best to be prepared for the worst.

  • Stay informed. Sign up for local alerts and know your community’s evacuation routes.

  • Practice your plan. Just like a fire drill, walk through your plan with your family so everyone knows what to do.
