We’ve all heard the term ‘curb appeal’ and this is something to think about whether you love your home with no plans on leaving or if you’re looking to give your home an aesthetic boost to bring in potential buyers. One way you can increase the curb appeal of your home without decreasing the green in your wallet is simply by painting your front door.
The front door is usually the first thing your guests see when they come to your house, so make sure it makes a great first impression! Unless your goal is to scare everyone away and in that case…we understand that too.
For those of you that don’t mind the company, here’s what to do.
1.) You will want to remove all of the hardware. This includes the knobs, locks, knockers, everything. And if you’re not planning on replacing them then this is a great opportunity to give them a fresh polishing and a good soak.
2.) Next, you will need to cover any of the built-in hardware that you cannot remove, like a peephole for example. Just use painter’s tape to cover those details.
3.) There’s nothing worse than painting and painting just to have that paint (and your sweat and tears) refuse to stick and adhere to your surface. Don’t put yourself through that! A fresh coat of paint will adhere better if you scuff up the existing finish a bit. Use a sanding block with fine-grit sandpaper to texture the surface and prep if for your new paint.
4.) Clean! If you want to avoid any unwanted texture to your new door, be sure to clean off all the dust, debris, mud, bugs, or whatever else may be stuck to your door.
5.) Now it’s time to start seeing some real, obvious progress. It’s time to put brush to door! You want to first put down a drop cloth to protect your beloved porch and be sure to paint the door with an exterior-grade paint-and-primer-in one. Prop the door so that it remains slightly open through the process. This will ensure you’re able to paint all of the edges. From there, you can simply follow the manufacturer’s instructions for dry time. It’s likely you’ll need to apply two coats in order to get the coverage you’re looking for.

And just like that, you have a new ‘pop’ of inviting excitement added to your curb appeal!
