January is National Radon Action Month: What you need to know

When we think about keeping our homes safe, we mostly focus on things we can see like smoke detectors or childproof locks. But there’s another risk that’s invisible, odorless, and more common than many people realize: radon gas. January is National Radon Action Month, making it the perfect time to learn more and take simple steps to protect your family.

What Is Radon; Why Does It Matter?

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that comes from the breakdown of uranium in soil and rock. It can seep into homes through small cracks in foundations, crawl spaces, and basements. You can’t see or smell radon, but long-term exposure can be harmful.

Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States. The good news? There are steps you can take today to prevent your family’s risks of exposure.

Radon Testing Your Home

The only way to know if radon levels are high in your home is to test. Testing is easy, affordable, and can often be done with a simple at-home test kit. January is an ideal time to test, since homes are typically closed up during colder months the results can be more accurate.

If high radon levels are found, mitigation systems are available and proven to work, often reducing radon levels significantly.

What About Your Health?

If you’ve had long-term radon exposure or have other risk factors for lung cancer, it’s a good idea to talk with your medical provider about whether lung cancer screening is recommended for you. Early detection can make a big difference.

If you don’t currently have a medical provider, the Tuscarawas County Health Department Medical Office welcomes new patients and is happy to help. To make an appointment, call 330-343-5555, ext. 1810.
