June is recognized as National Pet Disaster Preparedness Month, and it’s the perfect reminder that emergencies affect every member of the family- including your pets!
The Tuscarawas County Health Department aims to make sure your animals are ready in case you ever need to evacuate your home due to weather, wildfires, power outages, or other emergencies.
Would you be ready to care for your pet in a disaster?
Just like people, pets need a plan. From having the right supplies to knowing where you can go together if you need to leave home quickly, a little preparation now can make a big difference in an emergency. According to the Red Cross, key steps to protect your pets during a disaster include:
- Making a pet emergency kit with food, water, medications, medical records, leashes, and comfort items.
- Planning ahead for a safe place to go that accepts animals — not all shelters or hotels do.
- Having your pet ID’d with up-to-date tags and microchip information.
- Staying informed through local emergency alerts.
