February is American Heart Month—a perfect time to think about simple habits to show your heart a little extra care. Heart disease remains one of the leading causes of illness, but the good news is that small, everyday choices can make a big difference. By focusing on healthy habits you can take meaningful steps toward better heart health.
Here are three heart healthy habits to focus on brought to you in partnership with the Tuscaraws County Health Department.
Heart Healthy Nutrition
- Try to build meals around whole foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins like fish and chicken, and heart-healthy fats from nuts and seeds.
- Reduce processed foods, added sugars, and excess salt.
Heart-healthy eating doesn’t have to be complicated and is something the whole family can practice together, building lifelong healthy habits together.
Stay Active
A key part of protecting your heart is keeping the blood pumping. No one is telling you that you need to join a gym and complete hours of strenuous exercise each week if that’s not your thing. But at least 2.5 hours of moderate to vigorous physical activity each week can do wonders for the heart.
This can include walking, biking, dancing, swimming, or any activity that gets your body moving and your heart pumping. Regular physical activity helps improve circulation, lower blood pressure, and boost overall well-being.
Maintaining a healthy weight
Even small, steady changes over time can lead to meaningful improvements. Watching portion sizes, eating a balanced diet, and staying physically active can help you maintain a weight that supports your heart and overall health.
American Heart Month is a great reminder to check in on your heart health and talk with a healthcare provider about your personal risk factors, including blood pressure, cholesterol, and family history.
