One Step, One Snack, One Change: Preventing Diabetes One Choice at a Time

November is Diabetes Awareness Month, making it the perfect time to check in on your health and take simple steps toward prevention. Type 2 diabetes is one of the most common chronic conditions in the U.S., but the good news is that it’s also one of the most preventable. A few daily habits can make a big difference in reducing your risk and improving your overall well-being.

These tips for reducing your risk of developing Type 2 diabetes is brought to you in partnership with the Tuscarawas Health Department.

Make Healthier Food Choices

You don’t need to overhaul your entire diet — start small. Add more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins to your meals. Try swapping out sugary drinks for water or unsweetened tea, and keep an eye on portion sizes. Even simple changes can help keep blood sugar levels steady and support long-term health.

Stay on The Move

Regular physical activity helps your body use insulin more effectively. Aim for about 30 minutes of moderate activity most days of the week — like walking, dancing, or even chasing your kids at the park! Every bit of movement adds up and helps lower your risk.

Keep an Eye on Weight and Screenings

Maintaining a healthy weight and getting regular checkups are key in preventing diabetes. Early detection matters — knowing your A1C levels (which measure average blood sugar over a few months) can help you and your healthcare provider make informed decisions.

The Tuscarawas County Health Department offers A1C screenings to help you stay on top of your health. If you’re at risk for diabetes or looking for a medical provider, call our Medical Office at 330-343-5555, ext. 1810 to make an appointment.

Take Charge of Your Health

Small changes can have a big impact. By making mindful food choices, staying active, and keeping up with regular screenings, you’re taking real steps to protect your health — not just during Diabetes Awareness Month, but all year long.
