In celebration of Earth Day this year The Wilderness Center will offer activities to connect the whole family with nature through activities designed to inspire, invigorate, inform, entertain and challenge.
The Run Wild! Spring Trail Run will offer an opportunity to celebrate Earth Day with an early morning run/walk and experience the beauty of nature on April 23rd from 8 am to noon. Take on the timed 10K or 5K, or bring the whole family out for the One-Mile Fun Run. Registration fees support conservation and nature education efforts in our community. Participants can also partake in a free yoga flow provided by Flex Yoga Studios after the races.
In addition to the various trail runs, we will have Earth Day activities for the whole family. At 10:00am, we will begin our annual “Tree of Life” tree plantings. Throughout the year, generous donors give Tree of Life gifts in memory of loved ones, in honor of the special achievement, or to celebrate life’s monumental occasions. The funds donated to this program support a significant conservation project, and this year, we will continue working to reforest an old farm field on Alabama Avenue by planting 250 sugar maples and 250 black cherry saplings. As always, we invited anyone who gave to the Tree of Life program or was honored with a Tree of Life gift for themselves or a loved one to participate in the planting.
In addition, The Wilderness Center will feature local artists on site demonstrating making art with recycled materials. Other family-friendly events include a playdate at our Nature Playscape with Earth Day science experiments and a spring flower walk led by one of our naturalists. All of these events (besides race registration) are free and open to the public!
