Spill-Proof Your Home! 5 Tips for Keeping Your Sanctuary Clean

If you have toddlers or small children running around, you might’ve come to terms with the fact that everything is a mess. But if you’re looking for a way to keep your space (and maybe mind?) a little less cluttered, read on.

While cleaning can be therapeutic, I don’t know a lot of moms or dads who would call it “fun.” If you feel like you’re drowning in the mess of toddlerhood, it might be time to try some of these tips.

  1. Buy washable furniture or furniture covers. The decorating world has heard the cries of parents everywhere. You can find couch cushion covers, washable rugs, and more to protect some of your big-ticket items.
  2. Invest in spill-proof sippy cups, snack cups, bowls, etc. It seems silly, but it will save you heartache and headache once your little one is mobile.
  3. Keep the messy stuff UP. You know to keep cleaners and medication out of reach, but make-up, glitter, baking products, etc. are a big mess when little hands get a hold of them. Keep those items high up, too!
  4. Spend time picking up the play area every evening. You don’t have to clean the entire room. In fact, that can get annoying night after night. But if you spend time cleaning up the puzzle or coloring supplies your child was using, you will feel a little less crowded.
  5. Better yet, work on cleaning up WITH your toddler. Make it fun and make it a collaboration. Your toddler thinks everything you do is fun right now- so take advantage and help them get in the habit of picking up their mess when they’re finished playing!

The most important thing is feeling comfortable in your home. It doesn’t need to be tidy or clean or Pinterest-perfect… so long as it’s comfortable to you. Get into a routine that works with your schedule and energy level. Don’t overdo it and never hesitate to ask for help.
