5 Tips to Budgeting for Kid Sports

Soccer, Baseball, Tennis, & Track sports springing up into the weekly routine- read on for 5 tips to budgeting kid sports!

Financial Tip Friday is brought to you in partnership with the 1st National Bank of Dennison.

With Spring Sports registration coming up- it’s time to start thinking schedules and affording these extra-curriculars.

With the many options of sports including at churches, schools, traveling teams or the local recreation centers, don’t forget to look at pricing!

Tip 1

Use a checking or savings account to pay for registration and ensure that there are no extra charges for end-of-the-season trophies or banquets etc.  If there are- find out at the beginning and plan for it.

Tip 2

Budget for extra snacks.  Shop in bulk!  When it’s your kids’ turn to bring snacks, think about pre-packaged food (Aldi’s chips are $5-6 for 18), apples or clementines.

Tip 3

Use Facebook and ask around for extra soccer cleats, or baseball bats etc.  Kids grow so fast and tend to only wear sports clothes for one to two seasons.  Shop resale or thrift stores (Goodwill, Salvation Army, Once Upon a Child) for deals.

Tip 4

Volunteer to help the league by coaching or running the snack stand to get free or reduced registration or participation fees.

Tip 5

Ask for a discount!  Barter a lower price in exchange for bringing a new participant (friend, neighbor, cousin) to the program or paying with cash.

Sports experiences are wonderful for children’s development but they should not put a financial burden on a family as they are not necessary but extras.

For help with savings, spending, and investing, speak to a local banker to help set up a solid foundation!Financial Tip Friday
