Winter Weather ❄️ Family Fun

Embrace the chill and make the most of snowy days! You don’t have to fear the cold weather- you might even find a way to enjoy it!

This informational campaign comes to you in partnership with the Stark County Community Action Agency.

Thankfully, the days are getting longer shorter, but the air still feels crisp and icy. Winter has a way of lingering in our lives, bringing with it cold temperatures, frost-kissed windows, and the occasional blanket of snow. For many parents, the shift to winter can bring a mix of excitement and anxiety. Here are some winter weather fun ideas that will have your family laughing, playing, and staying active, no matter how cold it gets outside!

1. Go Sledding!

Whether you’re heading to a local hill or finding a spot in your own yard, sledding is a thrilling winter activity for all ages. Even the youngest can join in with a little help! For the bigger kids (and adults), consider organizing a race or a snow obstacle course.

Tip: Don’t forget the snacks and hot cocoa for when it’s time to warm up!

2. Ice Skating

Many local cities have outdoor rinks during the winter months! Ice skating is a great way to stay active and you don’t have to be a pro to enjoy it. The kids will love learning how to glide across the ice!

Tip: Be sure to layer up—thermal socks and gloves are essential!

3. Build a Snowman (or Snow Family!)

No winter day is complete without the classic snowman, but why stop there? Have a snowman-building competition and see who can make the most creative snow creature. Maybe you’ll end up with a snow family complete with a snow dog! You can also make snow sculptures, creating a wintery art gallery in your own backyard.

Tip: Let kids get involved with decorating—hats, scarves, and buttons make a snowman feel personal.

4. Winter Nature Walks

Bundle up and take a nature walk to appreciate the beauty of winter. It’s the perfect time to observe animals in their natural habitat, spot animal tracks in the snow, and talk about the different trees and plants that thrive in the cold. This is a peaceful activity that can be a nice break from the winter hustle.

Tip: Keep a winter nature journal where kids can draw or write about the things they see on their walks.

5. Baking Winter Treats

Winter is the season for baking! It’s a great way to spend quality time with your little ones while filling the house with warmth and sweet smells. Try making gingerbread cookies, sugar cookies, or hot chocolate bombs. Kids can help mix, decorate, and taste-test the results.

Tip: Have a hot chocolate bar set up for after baking with marshmallows, whipped cream, and sprinkles.

6. Cozy Movie Days

On those days when the cold seems to have seeped right into your bones, there’s nothing better than huddling together for a cozy movie marathon. Build a fort out of blankets, grab all the pillows, and make some popcorn. Let each family member choose their favorite winter movie. Everyone can get cozy and enjoy the magic of a movie day.

Tip: Pick a series of movies to keep things interesting (think: Frozen followed by Frozen II, or Home Alone and Home Alone 2).

While winter can be a tough season to keep kids busy, it’s also one filled with opportunities for new experiences and bonding moments. Whether you’re outside building snow forts or inside baking cookies, there’s no limit to the ways you can make memories this season.

If you’ve tried any of these activities or have other winter fun ideas, share them in the comments below! Happy winter adventures!
