The concept of breastfeeding is simple, but the execution, benefits, laws, and intricacies of it can be confusing for first-time moms.
This informational campaign comes to you in partnership with the Stark County Community Action Agency.
A quick Google search will reveal the benefits of breastfeeding, but you will probably still be left with a few questions.
How long should I breastfeed?
Most experts recommend breastfeeding for your baby’s first 6 months, then adding appropriate solid foods and continuing to breastfeed until 1 (American Academy of Pediatrics) or 2 (WHO) years old.
How do I store breastmilk?
The CDC offers handling and storage guidelines for breastmilk. You can find that information here: https://www.cdc.gov/breastfeeding/recommendations/handling_breastmilk.htm.
Is it illegal to breastfeed in public?
Absolutely not. All 50 states as well as D.C., Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands have laws allowing women to breastfeed both privately and publicly.
Can I fly with breastmilk?
You can. Breastmilk and formula do not need to be in 3.4 ounce containers. Additionally, they do not need to be in a quart-size bag. You can bring ice packs and freezer packs to maintain a safe temperature for the liquids, too.
The SCCAA Community Actions Pathway HUB is an available resource for pregnant and new mothers in need of support, education, and community services. For more information about breastfeeding, breastmilk, and your rights as a mother, visit the CDC’s website.
