The Center for Disease Control, Children’s Health Council, and Akron Children’s Hospital have all offered tips for a positive start to the school year. Check out their advice below:

Set the Stage for a Return to School

  • Talk to your child about their feelings about the upcoming school year.
  • Look at your child’s schedule with them to plan out their day.
  • Discuss any big changes or challenges and make a plan for approaching them.

Plan Ahead

  • Take some time to visit the school or campus. If possible, walk through a typical school day with them.
  • Purchase school supplies and clothes. Pack their bookbag and have fun deciding on a first day of school outfit.
  • Discuss new expectations and draft a daily routine together.

Establish A Daily Routine that Considers the Following:

  • Regular times for healthy meals, play, and homework every day.
  • 9-12 hours of sleep every night to help them learn.
  • Regular one-on-one time, without screens, to do something relaxing and fun.

Build Connections with School Classmates, Teachers, and Staff

  • Find a friend for bus rides or carpools to make going to school easier.
  • Meet with teachers and staff prior to the start of school.
  • Familiarize yourself with school support staff, resources, and volunteer opportunities.

Encourage Kids to Share their Feelings

  • Regularly ask your child how they are feeling and acknowledge those feelings.
  • Brainstorm ways to address possible problems or sources of anxiety.
  • Discuss strategies for managing stress such as belly breathing and positive self talk.

Enlist Resources to Support Your Child’s Overall Wellbeing

  • Academic: Talk to your child’s teachers about how you can support their needs at school. Inquire about academic resources and support that is available to them.
  • Mental and Emotional Health: If your child’s feelings are affecting their sleep or school, talk to school behavioral health staff or their doctor about ways to help.
  • Physical Health: Schedule a health check-up to stay up to date on your child’s routine health care.
