Are You Raising a ’90s Kid?

Oh Snap! Are you raising a ’90s kid? (As if! Amiright?) I might be… So sue me! Check out these “90s” parenting characteristics.

This informational campaign comes to you in partnership with the Stark County Community Action Agency.

It’s impossible to put parents in any one category, but I recently heard about a new parenting trend. As a 90s kid, this one really appeals to me.

Are you raising a “90s kids”? You might be if you:

  • enjoy pulling out a board game or deck of cards on family night
  • encourage your children to explore the outdoors and play in the elements – rain, snow, mud, the woods
  • grant them a little freedom to roam the neighborhood, bike with friends, or explore the local creek
  • play boredom-busting games like “I’m Thinking of an Animal” or “I Spy”
  • encourage your kids to cook their own meals and prep their own snacks
  • stick to a single sport per season and focus a little less on the hustle
  • let your kids walk to school or a friend’s house close by

I think that every generation of parents aims to do more, be more, and demand more for their kids… so I’m not saying we “go back” to any time in history. But it’s a nice little sprinkle of nostalgia to raise our kiddos with some of the freedom and simplicity that shaped us.
