Through colorful expressions and an inspiring message, Latino students from Dover and New Philadelphia are putting together a collective mural to be on display in downtown New Philadelphia.
For the past eight months, the Tuscarawas County Public Library System and Tuscarawas Arts Partnership (TAP) have been working together to coordinate the project for the local students. Students began their work at the Main Library for in-class presentations such as quilting and Latin American Art & Literacy and designed their panels in sketchbooks. After the class and design work, the students continued the workshops at The Ezekiel Project where their designs were transferred and painted onto 4 foot by 4-foot panels.
Jeff Bray, Public Services Associate of the Main Library for the Tuscarawas County Public Library System, says, “This project is something that I’ve been wanting to do for quite some time. I would drive around, see the new murals going up around town and think how cool it would be to have one celebrating our Latino neighbors. Latinos are such a big part of Tuscarawas County and this mural is a way to celebrate their culture and show that we’re happy they’re here – that they belong and we are one big community. It also brings me joy to see the Latino students creating this and having pride in their identities as Latinos in our community. ”
“I am honored to have been selected for the project, but mostly I am honored to have met these incredible young artists,” says Kathi Tustin, lead artist in the Latino Mural Project. “Most of these young artists are twelve to fourteen and seventeen years old and I tell you the truth they have listened and learned…gone forward with thoughts and techniques that are way beyond their years. It is fascinating!”
Jorge Antunez, mural assistant, and the project’s photographer and videographer states, “I’m honored to be part of this project. It amazes me how talented these kids are. It’s an opportunity for all of us to grow and learn – as well as most importantly inspire others.” Jason Hershberger, the mural assistant, adds, “It’s nice being a part of something bigger than myself. We’re here to help the kids share their vision.”
The brightly-colored mural will be a collection of 4 foot by 4-foot panels designed by the students. Each panel represents the students’ quilt-like designs and individual expressions along the center of the square.
“Every time I visit a workshop, I’m amazed at the growth and progress from each student,” says Wilma K. Mullet, Executive Director of Tuscarawas Arts Partnership. “This mural is a visual representation of the humanity of the community. It celebrates their culture and heritage while giving the students an opportunity to creatively express who they are.”
The project is nearly complete in meeting its fundraising goal. Those that are interested in donating to the project can contact tuscarawasartspartnership@gmail.com.
The mural will be installed along 1st Drive NW near MAD Bros. The Unveiling Event of the Latino Mural Project is scheduled for Wednesday, September 15, 2021, at 6:00 PM which corresponds with Hispanic Heritage Month.
