Handwashing at School and in Public Places: The Pre-Requisite Guide

For us moms, talking about proper handwashing with our children is crucial, especially when they are at school or in public places filled with all kinds of cooties. Schools are breeding grounds for germs, and children are known to be curious and touch various surfaces. To ensure your child’s well-being, consider these tips:

  1. Teach the 20-Second Rule: Encourage your child to wash their hands for at least 20 seconds, which is roughly the time it takes to sing the “Happy Birthday” song twice. This ensures thorough cleaning.
  2. Proper Technique: Explain the correct handwashing technique, including lathering with soap, scrubbing the palms, backs of hands, between fingers, and under the nails. Rinse thoroughly with running water.
  3. Hand Sanitizer: In situations where soap and water are not readily available, teach your child to use hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol content. However, remind them that soap and water are still the best option.
  4. Lead by Example: Children often learn by observing. Make sure you set a good example by practicing proper handwashing yourself.

Proper Handwashing Technique

Proper handwashing involves a series of steps to ensure thorough cleaning:

  1. **Wet your hands with clean, running water, and apply soap.
  2. Lather your hands by rubbing them together with the soap. Be sure to get between your fingers, under your nails, and the backs of your hands.
  3. Scrub for at least 20 seconds. As mentioned earlier, singing the “Happy Birthday” song twice is a useful timer.
  4. Rinse your hands thoroughly under clean, running water.
  5. Dry your hands using a clean towel or air dryer. Avoid using a shared towel if possible.
