Learn More About My22qt

Hi everybody! My name is Summerly Rowlands and my business, my22qt, is an organization inspired by my daughter, Izzy, who was born on July 1st, 2021. She was diagnosed with the rare genetic disorder 22q11.2 deletion syndrome at 22 days old during an 18 day inpatient stay at Akron Children’s. The hospital stay was mentally, emotionally, physically, & spiritually draining, and ultimately, we left there with our lives forever changed.

When we first heard the words 22q11, or DiGeorge syndrome as some people refer to it, we had no idea what it meant, and truly, neither did most of our medical staff outside of our geneticist. Now, Izzy works with 11 specialists, and they’re all wonderful, but they don’t fully understand her condition as a whole – they just know the aspect that they’re managing. As her dad and I had to quickly learn and become experts of this genetic disorder, we thought it was alarming how little there is out there about her syndrome. Especially because it’s the 2nd most common genetic disorder following Down syndrome.

At the beginning of September, we were taking Izzy to one of her outpatient appointments & after a bit of conversation, one thing led to another, and we decided that we wanted to share our daughter’s story and spread the word about her condition to help others. The idea started out as a blog, but has transpired into so much more.

Today, I am the official sole proprietor of my22qt through the state of Ohio, and while I am the owner & creator of it all, Izzy’s dad helps with all of the backend work of analytics, logistics, and security. The site shares both the facts of 22q11.2 deletion syndrome and Izzy’s personal journey. There is a blog that I add to weekly, monthly newsletters sent out to those who subscribe, and then an online shop full of my22qt gear. All proceeds from the shop help fund the website & business, and then proceeds from fundraisers are donated to children’s hospitals, specifically genetic departments & 22q clinics. The mission of my22qt is to raise awareness, help families cope & find understanding, and pay it forward.
