What is mindful movement?
To bring full attention to the present moment and experience the here and now. Bringing awareness to our movement and focus on breathing or the way the body feels as it moves.
What are the benefits of it?
- Lowers stress
- Releases stagnant energy
- Strengthens mind-body connection
- Encourages self-care
- Uplifted mood and energy boost
How can a person practice mindful movements?
- Notice what is happening in the body.
- Recognize what is on the mind – notice troublesome thoughts we cannot stop. Recognize habitual patterns.
- Accept that feelings and thoughts are impermanent and just passing through. Allow them to be in the space you are noticing. Allow oneself to experience what is going on in the body.
- If there is resistance notice how that feels with a sense of kindness to yourself. Breathe into the blockage or difficulty with a sense of softness.
If your mobility is limited, notice what movements you can do with ease. Try to capitalize on movements that are OK for you, even circling your arms, hands, or feet, or flexing the wrists. Allowing, acceptance and kindness are key to any mindfulness practice, still or moving, sitting, laying down or standing.
