As winter blankets our surroundings in frosty air, mothers need to be vigilant about keeping their babies warm without risking overheating. Additionally, safeguarding your little one against sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is a top priority. In this article, we will explore five practical ways to prevent overheating and reduce the risk of SIDS during the cold winter months. As a bonus, we’ll shed light on the Cribs for Kids Program through the Tuscarawas County Health Department, which offers a safe sleeping solution for income-eligible families.

-
Dress Your Baby in Layers:
One effective way to keep your baby warm without overheating is to dress them in layers. Use breathable materials like cotton and avoid heavy blankets that may lead to excessive warmth. As a rule of thumb, your baby should be dressed in one more layer than you are comfortable wearing in the same environment.
-
Maintain Optimal Room Temperature:
Maintaining a comfortable room temperature is crucial to prevent both overheating and chilling. Keep the nursery between 68-72 degrees Fahrenheit (20-22 degrees Celsius) to create a cozy environment for your little one. Use a reliable thermometer to monitor the room temperature and adjust it accordingly.
-
Utilize Safe Sleep Practices:
Reduce the risk of SIDS by following safe sleep practices recommended by pediatricians. Always place your baby on their back to sleep, use a firm mattress with a fitted sheet, and avoid placing toys, pillows, or loose bedding in the crib. Ensure that the crib is free from potential hazards to provide a safe sleeping space for your baby.
-
Monitor Signs of Overheating:
Be attentive to signs of overheating, such as flushed cheeks, damp hair, or if your baby feels hot to the touch. Adjust the layers of clothing or the room temperature accordingly. Avoid covering your baby’s face while they sleep and make sure they have ample space around them.
-
Choose Appropriate Bedding:
Opt for lightweight, breathable bedding to keep your baby warm without the risk of overheating. Use sleep sacks or wearable blankets instead of loose blankets to ensure that your baby stays cozy without the danger of suffocation. Ensure that the bedding fits snugly around your baby without being too tight.
