WINTER IS COMING.
SO IS SLIPPING AND FALLING ON YOUR TUSHY.
While it does get a laugh or two for less serious falls, some can cause bruising, pain, and broken bones! As winter approaches, it’s time to gear up for fall prevention to protect us, our little ones, and our elders!
Here are seven tips to ensure your home is a winter wonderland, not a slip-and-slide:
1. Slip-Resistant Flooring: Invest in slip-resistant rugs and mats, particularly in high-traffic areas like the entryway. Ensure that they have proper backing to stay securely in place.
2. Well-Lit Pathways: Winter days are shorter, and well-lit pathways are essential. Install bright outdoor lights to guide your way and consider motion-sensor lights to illuminate pathways at night.
3. Shoe Check at the Door: Encourage a ‘no shoes inside’ policy to avoid bringing in snow and slush. Instead, provide cozy indoor slippers to keep little feet warm and steady.
4. Handrails and Grab Bars: Ensure that staircases and hallways have sturdy handrails. Consider installing grab bars in bathrooms to provide additional support.
5. Clear Pathways: Keep outdoor pathways free from snow and ice. A little shoveling or salting can go a long way in preventing slips and falls.
6. Winter Traction for Footwear: Invest in winter-ready footwear with good traction. This goes for both you and the kiddos. Ensure that boots have non-slip soles for added stability.
7. Stay Active Indoors: Cold weather can make outdoor activities challenging, but staying active is crucial. Engage in indoor exercises and activities to keep the family moving without the risk of slipping on icy surfaces.
