Ohio mamas, let’s talk about something that’s as unpredictable as your toddler’s mood swings—Ohio weather! We all know those thunderstorms and tornadoes can sneak up on us, but fear not, because we’ve got your back with some tips to keep your family safe and sound while having a bit of fun along the way.

1. Spotting Storm Signs:

Think of yourself as a weather detective! Keep an eye out for clues like darkening skies (bonus points if they turn funky shades of green), sudden gusts of wind that could rival a toddler tantrum, or the distant grumble of thunder. If you see hail big enough to make you consider getting a helmet, or those tornado sirens start wailing, it’s time to spring into action! Make a break for the lowest level of the building you’re in, away from windows, and drop to the floor–just like we practiced in school!

Did you know you might not always get notified of a tornado before it hits? Check out the signs a tornado may be on its way toward you here: Ready.gov/tornadoes

2. Surfing the Web for Weather:

No, I’m not talking about surfing the waves—though that could be fun, too! When it comes to checking weather forecasts, the internet is your best friend. Websites like the National Weather Service or your local news stations have all the deets you need to stay ahead of the weather game. Bonus tip: Weather apps are like having a personal meteorologist in your pocket—just without the fancy degree!

3. Emergency Kit Essentials:

Let’s play a game of “What’s in Mom’s Emergency Kit?”
You’ll need:
  • Snacks (because let’s face it, hunger strikes at the worst times)
  • Enough water to hydrate a small army
  • A radio to jam out to while waiting out the storm (and get updates on what’s going on out there)
  • First aid supplies
  • A flashlight for flashlight tag (emergency edition)
  • Candles and a lighter/matches if the power goes out
  • A blanket fort starter pack for maximum cozy vibes
  • Oh, and a stash of chocolate—because chocolate makes everything better!

Make sure to practice emergency drills with your family regularly so they know exactly what to do in case of emergency!
