Nearly two dozen kids are involved in an apparent adverse reaction to candy that caused several to need medical attention.

The Perry Township Police Department issued a press release that confirmed police and fire EMS crews were called to Perry High School just before 9:00 a.m. today.

Officials say they were notified that several students were experiencing medical concerns after ingesting candy brought to school. Students experiencing medical concerns and those known to have eaten the candy were assessed by medical personnel on scene.

The parents and legal guardians of those children affected have been contacted.

Police note approximately 20 students have been identified as being involved at this time. Five of those students were transported to local hospitals.

Students not immediately transported by EMS were able to have parents and guardians choose whether or not to take them to the hospital for observation. Officials note many of them did so.

Investigators have confirmed the candy was recovered and has been transported to the Stark County Crime Lab for Immediate analysts.

School officials released the following statement via the high school’s Facebook page:

“Parents and Community Members:

The safety and well-being of our students is our top priority. As many of you are aware, some of our students may have been affected by candy that was brought to school. The district is working closely with authorities to fully investigate the situation to determine whether or not the candy was tampered with. Upon the findings of the investigation, appropriate disciplinary and legal action will be taken.”

The Investigation continues.

Assisting departments included units from Massillon Fire Department, Jackson Township Fire Department, and Perry Township Fire Department.
