Practical Tips for Managing Back-to-School Stress

Kids have officially been back to school for a few weeks now, but you might still be feeling the craziness of a new year, new schedule, and new activities.

This informational campaign comes to you in partnership with the Stark County Community Action Agency.

The school year can feel like a marathon—packed full of hustle and bustle, deadlines, and endless to-do lists. As a caregiver, you likely find yourself balancing work, home responsibilities, and trying to keep your children on track with their schoolwork. It’s no surprise that the back-to-school season can feel like you’re juggling everything at once.

Fortunately, there are effective strategies to help you manage stress during the school year. Here are some practical tips to help you cope and create a more balanced, less overwhelming routine for both you and your family.

1. Prioritize Self-Care

It’s easy to forget about your own well-being when you’re busy taking care of everyone else; however, maintaining your own physical and mental health is critical for managing the demands of the school year.

  • Set aside time for yourself. Even a 15-minute walk or a quiet cup of coffee can make a difference in your mood.
  • Practice mindfulness.
  • Stay active. Exercise is a proven stress-buster. Find an activity that you enjoy and can do regularly.

2. Set Realistic Expectations

The back-to-school season often brings with it the temptation to aim for perfection, whether it’s in your child’s grades, your home’s cleanliness, or your own productivity. Trust me- no one can do it all. Expecting yourself to is a fast track to burnout.

  • Focus on what truly matters. Be kind to yourself. Some days will be chaotic, and that’s okay. Allow room for flexibility.
  • Break tasks into manageable chunks.
  • Celebrate small wins. Don’t forget to acknowledge your successes, no matter how small. Whether it’s a smooth drop-off at school or getting through the day without a meltdown, those moments are victories.

3. Create Consistent Routines

Structure can significantly reduce stress, for both parents and kids. When everyone knows what to expect, there’s less room for confusion and anxiety. This is especially important in the mornings and evenings, which tend to be the most rushed parts of the day.

  • Establish a back-to-school routine. Have set bedtimes, wake-up times, and meal times to promote stability.
  • Plan school days the night before. Lay out clothes, pack backpacks, and plan lunches the evening before to avoid morning chaos.
  • Stick to a homework routine.

4. Open Communication with Teachers and School Staff

Open lines of communication with your child’s teachers can make a world of difference. If you’re feeling overwhelmed or upset, don’t hesitate to reach out for clarification.

  • Stay in touch with teachers. Check in with your child’s teachers regularly to stay updated on their progress and any issues that may arise. Teachers can offer valuable insights on how to support your child.
  • Attend parent-teacher conferences. Use these opportunities to discuss any concerns and stay proactive in addressing potential issues early on.

5. Keep Family Time Sacred

Amid the school-year hustle, it’s essential to carve out time for family bonding. Regular quality time helps everyone recharge and reconnect. It also provides a break from the pressures of school and work.

What you can do:

  • Plan family activities. Whether it’s a weekly movie night, a Sunday hike, or a dinner together without distractions, make time for fun.
  • Unplug from devices. Encourage everyone in the family to take a break from screens to engage in meaningful, face-to-face conversations.

The school year may never be completely stress-free, but with a little planning, flexibility, and self-care, it’s possible to make it more manageable. Remember: You’re doing your best, and that’s more than enough.
