Protect Your Biggest Organ: Your Skin!

Whether your on the patio with the girls or around the pool with your kids, applying (and reapplying) sunscreen should always be a priority!

This informational campaign comes to you in partnership with the Stark County Community Action Agency.

It’s summer time and I bet you often find yourself outside with the kids. And when you’re swimming at the pool, watching an afternoon baseball game, or biking around the neighborhood, you’re also soaking up the sun. Did you remember to lather up the kids with sunscreen and pop a hat on their heads? I bet you did. But did you apply sun protection to your own arms, legs, and face?

As moms, we forget to take care of ourselves. Unfortunately, melanoma, the deadliest type of skin cancer, is most commonly caused by exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays. When you avoid sunburn, you are avoiding skin cancer.

What to pack in Mom’s Summer Bag:

  • A lightweight, long-sleeve cover-up
  • UVA and UVB blocking sunglasses
  • A broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher.
  • A hat that covers your face (and ears & neck if you can!)

Broad-spectrum sunscreen blocks UVA and UVB rays. You need to reapply every 2 hours or per the directions on your bottle. Use a daily moisturizer or make-up foundation with SPF in it for added protection. Seek shade whenever you can- especially during the middle of the day when the sun is the strongest.
