Back-to-school season brings more than new backpacks and busy mornings- it also means more buses, bikes, pedestrians, and cars sharing the road. With everyone trying to adjust to new schedules and get to school and work on time, it’s more important than ever to slow down and keep your eyes on the road.
Slowing down and taking extra care in school zones and residential neighborhoods, especially during the busy hours before and after school, can make a big difference.
These quick safe driving tips are brought to you in partnership with the
Tuscarawas Couty Health Department..
Keep These Tips in Mind
- Slow down in school zones and follow posted speed limits and school drop-off procedures.
- Stay alert for children walking or biking, especially near schools, parks, playgrounds, and residential areas.
- Never block a crosswalk or pass a vehicle that has stopped for pedestrians.
- Give school buses plenty of space. Never pass a stopped school bus when its lights are flashing or the stop arm is extended. The area around a school bus is especially dangerous for children getting on and off.
- Watch for young bicyclists. Children may not always recognize traffic hazards, so give cyclists plenty of room and leave at least three feet when passing.
- Put the phone down. Distracted driving can happen in a split second, so save the texts, calls, and scrolling for when you’re safely parked.
- Remind your teens. If you have teens driving themselves to and from school, a quick reminder of the importance of safe driving can go a long way.
And parents, remember that your kids are watching. Following safe driving habits yourself is one of the best ways to teach them how to stay safe when they eventually become drivers, walkers, or cyclists themselves.
This school year, let’s all give ourselves a little extra time, slow down, and look out for one another. Getting there safely is always more important than getting there fast!
