The Playdate Guide: 10+ Ideas to Host a Fun & Stress-Free Playdate

In a world of Pinterest-perfect parties and perfectly edited outings, it can feel a little intimidating to host a new (or old!) friend for a playdate.

The good news? Your playdate doesn’t have to be perfect. It just needs to be fun and safe for the kids. Here are some quick, easy, and stress-free ideas to accomplish a fun playdate!

  • Don’t over-plan. If the kids are little, they may need a little more direction and supervision. Set out age-appropriate toys for babies and toddlers, and position the parents nearby. If the kids are older, they’ll likely have some ideas for the perfect playdate. Stay close so you can help (or referee), but give them a little space for their imagination.
  • Serve snacks that are healthy but yummy. I’m not picky about my daughter’s diet, but some parents adhere to dietary restrictions or rules. Try to find out what your guests prefer BEFORE they arrive. The more at home and comfortable they feel, the smoother the playdate will go.
  • Make your intentions clear. Do you expect the other parents to stay during the playdate? Discuss this beforehand when the plans are made. Additionally, if the kids will be getting messy or wet, let the other parents know. They can veto anything too wild or simply send along extra clothes.
  • Don’t be afraid to call it. If your kid woke up on the wrong side of the bed, is struggling to share, and has just come out of his third tantrum– it might be time to call it. Don’t feel embarrassed or upset- these things happen. Sometimes our kids are just having a day, and it doesn’t always line up with our plans.

Fun Playdate Activities:

  • Have a dance party
  • Build a fort
  • Bake cookies
  • Play card games or board games
  • Host a scavenger hunt
  • Set up an obstacle course
  • And my personal favorite, meet at the park!
