As the weather starts warming up, most of us are heading outside to enjoy parks, trails, and backyard fun. But along with the sunshine and fresh air comes a tiny threat—ticks. These little pests can carry Lyme disease, a serious illness that can affect both kids and adults. Don’t worry, though—we’ve got you covered with what to watch for and how to keep your family safe while still enjoying quality time outdoors.
May is Lyme Disease Awareness Month and we’re teaming up with the Tuscarawas County Health Department to bring you tips and information that’ll help your family avoid the risk of Lyme Disease.
What is Lyme Disease?
Lyme disease is a bacterial infection caused by the bite of a blacklegged tick, also known as a deer tick. This illness can lead to serious health issues if left untreated, making awareness and prevention especially important during warmer months when ticks are most active.
Recognizing the Symptoms
Common symptoms of Lyme disease include fever, headache, fatigue, and joint pain. One of the hallmark signs is a skin rash called erythema migrans, which often appears with a signature “bullseye” pattern around the bite site.
Prevention Tips
The first step in preventing Lyme disease is avoiding tick bites. Here are some practical steps to stay safe:
- Wear light-colored, long pants and tuck pant cuffs into your socks.
- Use insect repellent on your legs and socks.
- Avoid walking in tall grass or wooded areas when possible.
- Perform visual “tick checks” on yourself, children and pets frequently.
- Remove ticks promptly and carefully if found.
- Maintain a well-mowed yard and clean play areas to reduce tick habitats.
