(New Philadelphia, Ohio) – Big Brothers Big Sisters is kicking off a recruitment campaign called Match Madness beginning
July 1st, 2020. Throughout the month of July, Big Brothers Big Sisters is making the commitment to match 10 Littles that have been waiting to meet their Big so we can #EndTheWait. Right now, there are 26 kids waiting to meet their Big in Tuscarawas and Carroll counties, one waiting as long as five years. Mentoring is now more important than ever as children have been isolated and need a positive influence to build resiliency and support them through the unknowns they will face in the months and years ahead.
A Big is someone that has a few extra hours a month that is willing to spend time with a child and serve as a role model. Bigs are a friend, a positive influence, a support system, and an advocate. The organization is driven by the core believe that all children have potential, they just need someone to defend it. Matches spend time together doing activities that they both enjoy or want to try such as fishing, watching movies, playing sports, creating things, cooking, and more.
Throughout the month, individuals can follow along on Facebook to see Waiting Little profiles, watch videos from staff and matches, tune into a podcast to hear more about the need for mentoring, or hear success stories about the matches we are supporting. Over the past three months the agency has been unable to make the matches it typically does since application numbers have been down. As the area opens up, the need for mentors is urgent. Big Brothers Big Sisters will be sharing two podcasts a week with all kinds of inside information including what it takes to be a Big, interviews with our Waiting Littles, the specifics we look for in our outcomes, and much more.
Individuals that are unable to make the commitment to mentor are being asked to adopt a match. Every match costs Big Brothers Big Sisters a total of $1,200 in its first year. Sponsorship levels to adopt a match range from $300 – $1,200 and come with benefits including consistent social media recognition and event tickets. The campaign’s podcast is presented by Republic State Mortgage, meaning every sponsorship directly funds the success and support of a real local match.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of East Central Ohio currently has 51 active Community Based matches. Adding 10 additional matches in July would continue the trend of breaking records for the local organization with a total of 61 matches. There is a lot of work that goes into making a match, but the hardest part is recruiting the right Bigs. The goal of the campaign is to press the urgency of needing mentors and to encourage those that have been considering becoming a Big to take the step.
