Having a baby is amazing, exciting, a little scary, and very expensive. Unfortunately, no one warns you about that last one. Luckily, we’re here to share some ideas to save money during baby’s first year!

It’s difficult to calculate the cost of a baby. Many families have costs upward of $17,000 per year of child-related expenses (USAFacts.org). If you’re anything like me, you’re trying to find ways to cut costs. Here are a few ways to do that during the first few years of your baby’s life.
5 Tips for Saving
- You need less clothes than you think. Honestly, for my daughter’s first 6 months I kept her in white onesies and zip-up jammies- that was it. Your baby doesn’t need shoes or anything “extra” like sweaters, suspenders, or big bows (but I know they’re super cute!).
- Consider cloth diapering. The cost is a little more upfront, but you can use your baby registry and wish list to collect diapers. In the long run, you will save thousands. (We did!) It’s especially cost effective if you plan to have more than one kiddo. Or you can resell them after you’re done!
- Breastfeed your baby. Exclusively breastfeeding is “free”, but the cost of pumps, bras, pads, storage containers, etc. add up. Formula is expensive, though, so it’s important to compare the costs and figure out what works best for your family.
- Buy or register for versatile items. Dressers that double as changing tables, carseats that convert to a toddler seat, strollers that come in a set with a car seat base and carrier… there are many ways to double up on an item’s use and save some money. Do you really need a bouncer AND a swing? The answer is probably no…
- Look for free classes. Before your baby is born, you can find birthing classes, breastfeeding classes, and more at your local hospital or delivery center. After your little ones has arrived, check out mommy and me events at local libraries, community centers, and more.
Times are tough for many families. It’s more important than ever to save money and cut costs. Taking these steps for your family can help you keep a little money in your purse without sacrificing necessities, comfort, and fun.
