Dover Public Library’s Teen Tuesdays will return this fall with a series of five events inspired by Teen Read Week and funded by the 2017 YALSA/Dollar General Teen Read Week™ Program Grant.
(Dover, Ohio) The series follows the Teen Read Week theme: Unleash Your Story and will encourage local teens to tell their stories in a variety of creative ways. The series begins on Tuesday, September 12 and runs through October 10. All events are free, open to teens in grades six through twelve, and begin at 3:00 PM. All materials will be provided. Registration is not required.
The Teen Read Week series begins on September 12 with an Art Studio that will focus on using art to tell a story. Teens will be provided with art supplies to create their own masterpieces. Each teen participant will leave with a new sketchbook and a drawing challenge.
September 19, the series continues with a Creative Writing Workshop to encourage teen writers to develop their own stories with writing prompts, games, and other activities. Each teen participant will leave with a new notebook to continue their writing outside the library.
Next, on September 26, teens will be invited to use the Library’s flip cameras to film their stories at a special Video Club event. Computers in the Technology Room will be available for teens to use to edit their videos with new software. Teens will be provided with storyboarding worksheets and more resources to help them plan and shoot their videos.
The final workshop in the series will take place on October 3. This Stop Motion Animation Workshop will provide teens with the equipment and art supplies necessary to make their first stop motion animation video.
Teens can show off their work at the screening event on October 10. Here, teens will have the chance to share their work and connect with other teen creators in a relaxed environment. Teen favorite activities will also be available for teens to try again or for the first time.
“I’m very excited for this series,” says Teen Librarian Liz Strauss. “We have such creative teens in our area! I can’t wait to see what they make with new supplies and software.”
Throughout the series, extra handouts and materials will be provided to students at the Dover High School and Dover Middle School Libraries as well as the Teen Zone in the Dover Public Library so that busy students who cannot come to the Teen Tuesday events can still participate and benefit from the series.
The 2017 YALSA/Dollar General Teen Read Week™ Program Grant will fund all art supplies, software, and giveaways for this series as well as a collection of books on famous YouTubers, blogging, creating videos, and more. These books will be available in the rotating collection at Dover High School and the Dover Public Library for checkout.
