(New Philadelphia, Ohio) – The holiday season is often filled with family and friends visiting each
other at home and Empower Tusc wants to take this opportunity to send a friendly reminder to the
community!

Now is a great time to get rid of unwanted and unused prescription medications. As you open your
doors to family and friends, take a moment to pause and to clean out medicine cabinets, drawers,
and other areas forgotten medications may be hiding.

“Throughout the year, new medications may enter your home either from a short-term treatment or an
ongoing medical treatment regimen. You may have even added some over the counter (OTC)
medications to your “medicine cabinet” storage throughout your home,” explained Jeff Neidig,
pharmacist, and chairperson of the Empower Tusc Prescription Drug Committee. “With many visiting
family for the holidays, now is a great time to discuss medication storage and disposal for the overall
safety of your family. We encourage families to have conversations not only about how to use
medications, but also how to secure those that are currently being used, and discard those you no
longer need.”

Tuscarawas County residents have several options to safely dispose of unused medicines once they
clean out their supplies. They can contact Empower Tusc at (330) 440-7320 and receive a free
Deterra Drug Disposal pouch for small amounts of medications, drop off the medications at one of six
permanent drop box disposal stations located throughout the county, or dispose at a national drug
take back event in April and October each year.
